Without Oil We Wouldn’t Have Plexiglass and N-95 Masks

Without Oil, We Wouldn’t Have Plexiglass and N-95 Masks

While there are many new and exciting renewable energy technologies emerging in the market, however, there are many products that will require us to always use oil. Canadians on average use 1.5 million barrels of oil per day for a variety of purposes outside energy usage.

Oil is required to produce Plexiglass and N-95 Masks

The past year has drastically increased the demand and public use of two new products, plexiglass and N-95 masks. Plexiglass has been used as safety dividers in retail, restaurants, and public spaces and has helped businesses stay open and operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Plexiglass is a flexible, lightweight, alternative to glass that is transparent and sturdy. This material is created through the distillation of hydrocarbon fuels, and when heated can be easily molded into desired forms.

N-95 masks are also petroleum-based and provide more protection against fine water and dust particles than basic cloth masks. Every piece of these masks are made of, or rely on petroleum in their creation:

    • The shell and covering of the mask are made of polyester
    • The critical filter is made of polypropylene,
    • Over the ear straps are made of thermoplastic
    • The nose clip is made of aluminum which requires petroleum to produce

Why Pleixglass and N-95 Masks are good for the Canadian Economy

Canada will continue to enjoy the economic boost created by the manufactures of plexiglass and N-95 masks while COVID health standards stay in place.
