Mike Bailey – Oil Rig Worker Turned Successful Entrepreneur
Becoming a successful entrepreneur is never an easy feat. It takes years of hard work, learning based on experience, being agile and a problem solver.
“Life offers few guarantees, but generally the harder and longer you work, the more likely you will succeed.” Mike Bailey
Mike Bailey is a true entrepreneur, he started his energy career working on the oil rigs of Saskatchewan and Alberta in the 1990. Fast forward to 2019, Mike is President to one of Canada’s most successful land services companies.
“I started my career in the Energy Industry in 1990 working on the drilling rigs in Alberta and Saskatchewan. These were lean times and I was fortunate to balance the down time by working on our family farm in Manitoba.“
What does it take to be an entrepreneur in today’s energy industry? They say entrepreneurial thinking is one of the most relevant skills for the 21st-century workforce. To be a good entrepreneur you need to be open and curious.
Entrepreneurial thinking also requires humility — the realization that what one already knows is just a foundation of knowledge. And that greater knowledge can only be built by talking to customers. To succeed as an entrepreneur, you have to know what your customers want.
“I built relationships by listening and understanding what my clients needs are. Then applying myself and my team to deliver those needs and earn trust.”
Successful business people have many traits in common. They are confident and optimistic, they are disciplined self starters, and they are open to any new ideas which cross their path.
“I built a team of people with different backgrounds, beliefs and knowledge. I believe we can achieve amazing results by developing new ideas and new ways to do old things.
At AiM we focus on developing our people. Nothing brings me more pleasure than watching an individual achieve their goals.”
Passion is another common trait of successful entrepreneurs. They genuinely love their work. They are willing to put in those extra hours to make the business succeed because there is a joy their business gives which goes beyond the money. The successful entrepreneur will always be reading and researching ways to make the business better.
“When I was first introduced to the land agent career my life changed and I found my true calling. I have worked on every aspect of surface land from the ground up and eventually accepted an in-house role as Vice President to develop the land strategy and manage major pipeline capital projects in Canada and the US. My passion to build and develop led me to found AiM in 2011.
Aim is an exciting fast paced environment that is very result driven. But more than that for me its home. I try and make everyone feel the same way and I see a lot of people that really care about each other here.”
However optimism, passion, listening skills, agility, innovation is meaningless without integrity. Mike truly believes the number one trait a successful entrepreneur must possess is integrity. He believes success is determined by the number of people who trust you, are willing to work for you, give you credit, lend you money, buy your products and services, and help you during difficult times.
Your character is the most important asset that you develop in your entire life, and your character is based on the amount of integrity you practice.
“I would like to think my clients and colleagues would say that I am a genuine and generous person. That I care about each of them because I do. Values are important to me and I try every day to be an example of this. If I’m doing the things I set out to each day, they will say these things about me.”
