Oil and Gas by the Numbers
As we talked about in a previous post – World Needs More Canada – Canada is home to the world’s 4th largest producer of oil and 3rd largest proven oil reserves, and world’s 6th largest producer of natural gas and 17th largest proven natural gas reserves.
Those are great numbers. Well, here are some other amazing numbers that you are probably not aware of regarding the Canadian oil and gas industry.
- 300 years – the number of years Canada’s vast natural gas reserves could sustain current production levels
- 840,000 km – the distance of the Canada pipeline network that carry crude oil to domestic and U.S. refineries
- 23% – the amount of energy exports that accounted for Canada’s total goods exported in 2019

Workers and Jobs
- 2.5 – the number of jobs created across Canada (direct and indirect) for every one job created in the oil sands sector
- 6.3% – the number of Indigenous people that make up the upstream industry’s workforce.
- 275 – the number of Indigenous suppliers, contractors and other businesses across Canada that service the oil and gas industry
- 27,000 – the estimated jobs created for Canada’s Atlantic offshore oil and gas industry
- 2.4 million – the total projected full-time equivalent jobs created by upstream oil and gas operations in Canada between 2020-2025
- $2.6 billion – the amount procured of goods and services of Indigenous people from the natural gas and oil industry

Revenues Generated
- $701 billion – the cumulative fiscal contribution generated by the energy industry for Canadian governments between 2000-2019, $505 billion of which came from oil and gas
- $530 billion – the total projected economic impact of all upstream oil and gas operations in Canada between 2020-2025
- $300 billion – the total projected economic impact of upstream oil sands operations in Canada between 2020-2025
- $177 billion – total projected economic impact of conventional upstream oil operations in Canada between 2020-2025
- $53 billion – total projected economic impact of upstream natural gas operations in Canada between 2020-2025

Tax Revenue Generated
- $22.6 billion – total projected net tax revenues from upstream oil and gas operations in Canada between 2020-2025
- $94 billion – total projected revenue generated by a healthy LNG industry for governments in British Columbia between 2020-2064
- $158 billion – total projected revenue generated by a healthy LNG industry for the Canadian governments From 2020-2064
