Swedish steel company creates fossil fuel free steel

Sweden’s clean energy technology is taking on the manufacturing sector. A group of Swedish manufacturers, utility owners, and miners have successfully invented a way to produce usable, commercially available steel without using any coal or other fossil fuels in its production process. The product will not only reduce environmental impact but also cut down on costs for companies producing goods from this new high quality material

By replacing coking coal with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen, a gas that has been proven to be an essential component towards reaching net zero emissions goals, the company was able to create steel that is completely fossil-free and produces less carbon emissions.

The global steel industry emits 9% of worldwide carbon emissions, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Until we find other ways to produce these products in a more environmentally friendly way, it’s important that we focus on how they are produced today and try to reduce their impact.

This solution is creative in that it takes into consideration the complexity of our world, and acknowledges that we are still reliant on many products responsible for carbon emissions. The way forward through adjusting processes rather than eliminating entirely product lines will result in a minimal change to current lifestyles but significant reduction over time within industry standards.

SSAB, the Swedish company behind this innovation, hopes that their breakthrough will convince other companies around the world to transition from traditional technologies and accelerate development on greener alternatives.

This breakthrough provides Canadian companies the potential to ride in this wake of innovation. Canada produced roughly 12.9 million tonnes of steel in 2019, and it is already a sustainable product solution as it is 100% recycle and the most recycled material in the world. This new technology paired with fair and open trade agreements between Canada, the United States and Mexico, means that North American steel producers are better positioned to compete and succeed in the global economy.
